My Uncle Mark taught me how to play “Heart and Soul” on the piano, and that became my shit for years. He was the sole creative influence I had as a kid, and probably is the reason I do this music now. I was trying to make a R.I.P./T.R.O.Y. song without it being too depressing. I thought about Common and Slug when I was trying to do the storytelling verse about the woman.
